86,400 Seconds...

Today I had an extremely unnecessary fight with my best friend, after which we both apologized and realized exactly how pointless the things were that we had been fighting over.

I took something extremely valuable from the fight.

The last few months I've been looking at people leaning on me, depending on me as a tremendous burden in my sobriety. Today I realized that it's not a burden, but a tremendous compliment. I should be looking at the fact that people turn to me for support, guidance, strength as a privilege not a chore. It means they have faith in me, confidence in me I may not always see in myself. From this point forward I will no longer look at people depending on me as a burden, but as a privilege and honor.

Ironically shortly after this realization a song came on the radio that I've heard hundreds of times. I've listened to it, but never really heard the meaning. I'm looking at this as a sign, my higher power once again working in mysterious ways...

Kris Allen - "Live Like We're Dying"

Sometimes we fall down, can't get back up
We're hiding behind skin that's too tough
How come we don't say I love you enough
Till it's to late, it's not too late

Our hearts are hungry for a food that won't come
And we could make a feast from these crumbs
And we're all staring down the barrel of a gun
So if your life flashed before you,
What would you wish you would've done

Yeah, we gotta start
Looking at the hands of the time we've been given
If this is all we got and we gotta start thinking
If every second counts on a clock that's ticking
Gotta live like we're dying

We only got 86,400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell them that we love them
While we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying

And if your plane fell out of the skies
Who would you call with your last goodbye
Should be so careful who we live out our lives
So when we long for absolution,
There'll no one on the line, yeah

Yeah, we gotta start
Looking at the hands of the time we've been given
If this is all we got and we gotta start thinking
If every second counts on a clock that's ticking
Gotta live like we're dying

We only got 86,400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell them that we love them
While we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying

Like we're dying, oh, like we're dying..

We only got 86,400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell them that we love them
While we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying

You never know a good thing till it's gone
You never see a crash till it's head on
Why do we think we're right when we're dead wrong
You never know a good thing till it's gone

Yeah, we gotta start
Looking at the hands of the time we've been given
If this is all we got and we gotta start thinking
If every second counts on a clock that's ticking
Gotta live like we're dying

We only got 86,400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell them that we love them
While we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying

Like we're dying, oh, like we're dying..

We only got 86,400 seconds in a day to
Turn it all around or to throw it all away
We gotta tell them that we love them
While we got the chance to say
Gotta live like we're dying..

  2. Bruce,

It is a compliment when people have faith in you. Just remember too that it is perfectly OK to say "no" to people. Take care of yourself first. Being of service does not mean being a doormat.

  3. I don't mean "look out for number one"; I mean, take care of your sobriety first. Otherwise, you're no good to anyone, including yourself.

  4. Glad that you resolved the issue with your friend. I ask myself How Important Is It when I get in an argument.

  5. Boundaries, gratitude, faith, hope and action are the keys for me. I don't always bat 1000 but I get close. I love the lyrics..so true and so wise. Have a beautiful 24.

  7. Bruce...some day please tap me at a meeting--I go to lots of them--because I do not remember what you look like, it has been such a long time. But I'd be HAPPY to talk with you, and answer any questions about why my blog is, for the moment, static. And...comments are open, as you found out.

I did NOT "remove" it, except for a few daze of insanity. And it you wish to read 'steveroni' there are 717 posts. None are hidden. though many SHOULD be.

Hey, I am just so happy that you are still sober.

This 'best friend' etc., etc., I think your sponsor should give you advice on that one. He KNOWS you. Most of the Peeps here in blogland do not.

    Hope we meet soon.
    PEACE!
    Steve E
